Rebel Star: The Sun’s Greatest Mysteries by Coli Rebel Star: The Sun’s Greatest Mysteries by Colin Stuart on Friday 26th February at 7:30pm on Zoom.

The Sun is many things: beauty, beacon, battery, belligerent. It’s the biggest thing for light-years around and yet we actually know relatively little about it. That’s changing thanks to an armada of new spacecraft recently lofted into the solar system to scrutinise the Sun in unprecedented detail. In a talk packed full of jaw-dropping images and videos, Colin Stuart will be your guide on a journey deep into the heart of our nearest star.

People on the AAS mailing list will receive a Zoom link tonight. If you would like to attend but haven’t received a Zoom link, please email chairman@ashfordastro.org.uk. This event is open to all, members and non-members alike!

Our Ewan Vellacott notes we are fast approaching " Our Ewan Vellacott notes we are fast approaching "Galaxy Season" for astrophotographers. Three constellations are rising in the east that contain loads and loads of galaxies - Leo, Virgo and Coma Berenices.

Friday night Ewan managed to capture the Leo Triplet. These three galaxies are about 35 million light-years from us, but they are still bright enough to photograph and can be seen through a medium-sized telescope (although your eyes will just see some fuzzy grey blobs).

For our meeting on Friday 29th January we are host For our meeting on Friday 29th January we are hosting an “Astronomical Assortment”! Instead of one main talk, several members will be giving mini talks. One of these will be Jason, speaking about crewed spaceflight.

60 years ago the first astronaut was selected from a pool of thousands and trained for years for a short 90 minute flight around the Earth on a state-sponsored mission using a modified ICBM as a launch vehicle. Now in the 21st century we have a permanent human presence in orbit, seen people pay to visit space as ‘space tourists’, and private industry is beginning to have a real impact on how we get there. Join Jason for a short flight through the history of crewed spaceflight and a peek into the future. #ashfordastronomicalsociety #ashfordastronomicalassortment
